Environmental responsibility
Global environmental challenges are a threat to people and planet alike.
Our efforts for the environment
Many of these environmental challenges are interlinked. Food waste, for example, accounts for 8% of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions. This is of particular relevance to our sector. Globally, approximately one-third of the world’s produced food ends up as waste. In a world in which many people are hungry and malnourished, this is both an environmental and a human tragedy.
Our environmental efforts are focused on minimizing waste in our production – especially packaging and food waste – and on reducing our CO2 footprint by reducing our energy consumption.
As a large part of our environmental footprint occurs in our supply chain, we partner with our suppliers to extend our activities and the positive impact we can have into our supply chain. By removing waste and losses every step along the way, we are able to further contribute to a circular economy.
Environmental management
In all of our factories, we are introducing the ISO 50001 energy management system, which helps us plan and measure our goals in increasing energy efficiency.
Besides, we use an energy management software, which enables us to monitor and identify the possibilities in energy efficiency.
Renewable energy
We aim to increase the use of renewable energy by developing and implementing new projects in our factories. Many of our production sites now have solar panels.
Effects on the climate
The "Climate Action" paragraph of the "Sustainable Development Goal" is an important part of our business model. That is why we set a goal to decrease the emission of greenhouse gases by 30% till 2025.
We have already reached a 21% decrease between 2010 and 2020. This achivement was the result of our energy efficiency development, including the modernization of technology and the efficient devision of labor between factories.
Resource management
Our goal is to use our resources efficiently throughout the whole supply chain. In order to do this, we are constantly looking for opportunities that enable us to reduce our energy and water use, and also our use of packaging materials.
We believe, that this is possible by avoiding waste in any form, therefore we are constantly monitorizing our waste reduction programs. This is not only rewarding from a busniess point of view, but also from an environmental aspect.
Our main results
Our Packaging pledge
Our aim is in line with our circularity ambition: to eliminate all unnecessary packaging, while working towards full recyclability of our packaging materials.
We have developed a company-wide strategy to ensure we become more efficient in how we use packaging.
Environmental responsibility in practice
Circular Economy
Contributing to a circular economy through better packaging
At Intersnack, we need packaging that keeps our products fresh and safe – but not at the planet’s expense. That’s why, we have set ourselves a Packaging Pledge, which targets Intersnack to cut packaging use by 15% and achieve 100% plastic packaging recyclability by 2025.
These are bold targets and we’re proud to be able to say that we already achieved an 11% reduction in the packaging materials we use by the end of 2022.
Now we’re taking our next steps to further decrease material use whilst partnering to improve national recycling infrastructure on a continuous journey towards circularity.
